Museum Promotion was an independent project aimed at designing a mailable promotional print piece for UBC's Beaty Biodiversity Museum. The objective was to come up with an biodiversity-related event accompanied by required contents on the Beaty Museum itself. The requirements are print piece, a mockup, and an envelope for mailing. The total duration of the project was seven weeks.

Selecting Event and Format

The event that I came up with is a marine life exhibition that showcases some water-type Pokémon and their real-life counterparts from the Canadian marine ecosystem. The content was mostly comparing how similar they are in terms of appearance and characteristics. I chose a pamphlet to based the the amount of the required text and the event content. It will be a small and special pamphlet as the event is targeting children and parents, so it should be easy and exciting for them to hold.

Process of the Customized Design

I chose the Pokémon Wailord to be the feature of the event because one of the main attraction of Beaty Museum is the blue whale skeleton. The pamphlet itself is based on its appearance. Each page was 5.5 x 8.5" (half of a letter-size paper), the total length was approximately three letter-sized paper.

Designing the Pamphlet

In terms of the content, the front side is the event content for the children, and back side is the required text for the parents to read. Therefore, the way that the information was laid out and designed was different on both page.

  • Because I am working with an IP, I decided to use their official images and applied image trace in Illustrator to achieve a hand-drawn effect.
  • The typeface was chosen specifically to evoke a sense of playfulness and joy.
  • The content is designed with a 6x6 grid on each page.
  • Colour scheme is inspired the the pattern of the blue whale's body and the ocean, the layering adds depth like diving into the ocean.

What I've Learned

Choosing a custom design was quite a challenge, especially when thinking about how certain elements, like the flaps, would work when printed. I also had to create my own mockup because the design did not fit any standard format. Another important lesson was being careful with intellectual property and understanding the restrictions involved in my role as a designer.
